SEASON 2006/7

WITHAM PHOENIX 1-2 NEWTOWN

Sunday Junior Cup action at Rivenhall on a heavy uncut village pitch against a very young side, av age app. 20!
Made heavy weather of the early exchanges but Hewitts chip onto the bar redressed the balance of play and minutes later, Miller nipped in to beat the keeper, half time 1-0.
2nd half and despite the team talk about keeping it tight, defensive blunders allowed Phoenix to level in the 1st minute but after Hewitts cross was handled in the box, ref Reid awarded a penalty. Hewitt, usually reliable, saw his shot well saved by Ben Sayward in the Phoenix goal. At the other end, Lee made his weekly outstanding save and with time running out Newtown had Payne to thank for the winner, off his knee apparently, but sees us through to face Renegades from Braintree in next round

Team - Lee; Ryan, Clover, Payne, Burridge; Gould, James, Dees, J.Davies; Miller, Hewitt (Hales 55). Unused sub-Tucker

NEWTOWN RES 0-3 BRAMWELL

Report to follow...........

Team - Line; Pottle (Barnes 46), Bullen, Lusted, Humm; Mark Gentille, Woodcock, Bowden, Sayer (Pembroke 46); Matt Gentille (K.Davies 70), B.Adams

NEWTOWN 1-2 POLSTEAD

Back to earth with a big bump after last weeks heroics!
Enforced changes and a good start with Clover 'claiming' his 1st of the season after pinball in the Polstead area finally saw him hit the onion bag. The away side came back well and levelled matters after a long crossfield pass was missed by the back 4 allowing a clear run through for the Pols striker to score.
2nd half, more pressure but missing cutting edge in attack and...same old story...the visitors scored with 15 remaining.
James rattled the bar with a free kick late on but no joy again in this instantly forgettable Wally Castle campaign

Team - Lee; Ryan, Clover, Payne (Dees 55), Burridge (Lusted 75); Gould, Hood, Hewitt, Miller, Davies; James

TOLLEGION 2-5 NEWTOWN

Without doubt THE performance of the season so far! Manager rollicking, change in system, response instant!!
Newtown did it the hard way after a debatable penalty decision went 1 down but came back with avengence. Miller crossed excellently to give James a peach of a header to level then follwed up with a pinpoint corner which Payne accepted with an easy header. Tails up now, Davies cut in from wide to deservedly make it 3 at half time. With the team talk of complacency ringing in their ears Newtown weathered early pressure to counter with Hood going through 1 on 1 to beat the keeper with ease, despite the village idiot on the line flagging for f*** knows what!! To complete a morning of misery for the highly rated Tollesbury side, Davies got his 2nd and Newtowns 5th with an accurate finish to the far post. Toll pulled one back but no more than a consolation. Season starts here.....

Team - Lee; Wheatley, Payne, Clover, Burridge; Gould (Hewitt 80), Miller (Lusted 75), Hood, Nicklin, J.Davies (Ryan 80), James.

NEWTOWN 0-1 BRAMWELL

Slight improvement performance wise but defeat against a lower league club who had 2 shots all game is simply not good enough. Former Newtown player Robbie Czapla scored the goal that mattered mid 2nd half. Chances were squandered in both halves but credit to the Bramwell keeper, despite wearing shades and not playing into the sun, pulled off 2 excellent saves.

Team - Lee; Clover (Burridge 75), Payne, Wheatley; Ryan, Nicklin (Lusted 80), Hood (Hewitt 85), James, J.Davies; Miller, Gould
NEWTOWN 2-3 RIVERVIEW

Still no points from the 1st 2 league games but gave it a good go late 2nd half. Same starting XI as last week but v sloppy 1st half beginning with a cross being turned into his own net by Payne, Lee no chance. Newtown continued to huff & puff until Nicklin scored well from the angle. Just to finish the 1st period nicely, Newtown caught napping as a long ball saw Riverview break clear & despite Lee making an initial save, the rebound put the visitors in front at half time 2-1.
With the half time team talk still ringing in some players ears, Newtown came out brighter but couldn't create a goalscoring chance. Gould went clear but  shot straight at the keeper. Unfortunately Riverview countered and made it 3-1. Newtown went for broke with all 3 subs on and 3-4-3 formation. Hewitt should have scored with the net beckoning but dragged his shot wide. Finally the pressure paid off with Payne heading in at the right end but no time for Newtown to grab a leveller

Team - Lee; Ryan, Clover, Payne, Burridge (Wheatley 65); Nicklin, James, Lusted (Hood 55), J.Davies (Hewitt 65), Miller, Gould.

REAL BTS 4-0 NEWTOWN

1st League game and disappointing return for many reasons.
Goalless at the break and although had not played well, defended well with Lee making a fantastic triple save and Burridge clearing acrobatically from under the crossbar!
10 mins into the 2nd half, sloppy marking gifted BTS their 1st goal. What happened in the next 10 mins effectively killed the game with Referee Brine the centre of controversy. BTS firstly awarded a penalty after the ball hit Paynes nose, not arm, 2-0 BTS. Davies was overheard passing comment to an opponent which Brine assumed was at him, promptly dismissed Davies and 10 man Newtown were finished. 2 more goals, both of which Lee will be disappointed with conceding ended the contest with a scoreline totally flattering BTS who, although probably deserved 3 pts, were not 4-0 better.

Team - Lee; Ryan, Payne (Hewitt 80) Clover, Burridge; Nicklin (Tucker 75), James, Lusted (Pembroke 85), J.Davies; Miller, Gould.

NEWTOWN RES 2-6 POLSTEAD

Report to follow....

NEWTOWN 3-1 FEERING

More changes and after a slow start against Div 4 opponents, James stole in at the far post to thump Newtown in front. More set piece joy to follow, Nicklin and James going for the same ball made contact and scored, Gary claiming it, Stu had other ideas though!
Unable to build on this, Newrown let Feering back in after Lee charged from goal and did an Eric Scumacher on a Feering forward, conceding a penalty and luckily only getting a yellow! Penalty scored 2-1.
With Payne, Lusted & Hewitt on, Newtown secured the win after Lusted finished well from 20 yds when put clear.

Team - Lee; Ryan, Wheatley, Clover, Burridge (Payne 60); Tucker (Lusted 75), James, Dees, J.Davies: Miller (Hewitt 80), Nicklin

ST EDMUNDS 5-3 NEWTOWN

A number of changes gave some new faces a run out and 5 mins in, Mike Miller opened his account with a well taken effort across goal. 3 mad minutes mid half saw the home side score twice and lead 2-1 at Half Time.
Struggling with a dead leg, Sam Hood just about found the legs to run 10 yds before firing an excellent equaliser from 20 yds but another unexplainable 5 min lapse cost us the game, 3 more goals against. Craig Dees last min header in vain.

Team - Lee; Ryan, Greenwood, Dees, Burridge; Tucker (J.Davies 70), Hood, James, Nicklin; Gould, Miller (Topolewski 85)

NEWTOWN RES 1-5 BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT

Well what can i say one of them games really, first one for the ressies of the season, with a very differnt lineup to what most are used to.
Not sure on every ones names yet so bare with my reports ofer the next few weeks.
Any way lead was taken after about 20 mins from Ben Adams and the ressies looked to be hanging in but in typical newtown fasion we lost are heads and they quickly got 2 more, then young Gareath got injuried so Davies had to call in on Expierence so that ment sayer at left back, game really stayed like that they got 2 more in the second half but we still all got stuck in.
lineup ( will stick to firstnames as dont know second yet ) Antony,Chris p, Ivan , Ian f, Gareth(30), Matt Rob, Ben , Dave, Alec, Gragham(75)  Subs Sayer (30) Davies (75)

NEWTOWN 2-2 NORFOLK DESTROYERS

After an encouraging pre-season and record numbers at training, it was down to the real business with an opening Wally Castle game against Div 3 opponents formerly known as Bricklayers.
Playing downhill with the wind on a revamped Old Heath Rec pitch, Newtown were soon into their stride and despite the late arrival of Ref Craig Dees, the 'stand in' ref awarded a clear cut penalty to Newtown after a foul on Stu James. Tim Payne stepped up and gave the hobbit in the Destroyers goal no chance by lifting it high into the net! Better followed, the ref showed up (still in those garish boots!!) and Sam Burridge made a rare foray into the opponents half. Usually 25 yds out from goal would prove to be nosebleed territory for the Newtown Casanova but, again, noticing the bloke from Fantasy Island between the sticks (hey boss, it's da plane!!!), his cross somehow caught a sudden gust and gave Bilbo no chance, 2-0 Newtown.
It was looking too good from the side so you would expect us to ease up and give our oppo's a chance which the 40th minute penalty did and gave 'Brickies' a lifeline which they hadn't really deserved to that point.
H/T 2-1
2nd half, different story! Bouyed by only a goal deficit, Norfolk took the upper hand and but for some heroics from Simmo, might have taken the lead earlier than the 65th minute after a catalogue of errors leading up to the goal, which was well taken.
All 3 subs used but to no avail and in the end, a good point but inconsistent performance.

Team - Lee; Wheatley (Broughton 60), Payne, Clover, Burridge; Hood (Hewitt 70), James, J.Davies, Ryan; Miller (Lusted 65), Nicklin.
